Memoir of Sir James Dalrymple
December 18, 2007I just happened on this book for sale at Amazon.com. It was written by Aeneas James George Mackay in 1873 and reprinted by Elibron Classics. It should be a challenging but interesting read.

FamilySearch and the Dalrymples
December 3, 2007Just so there is no confusion about the information I am typing in here now I would like to point out that pretty much all the information I have gotten about the Dalrymples from this point on has come from FamilySearch.com. Some I had gotten 20 years ago from the local temple but most of it has come from the internet. I have also used other internet services like RootsWeb to verify and confirm the best I can for now. If anyone decides that they need credit for the information I have gotten from any of these places please let me know and I will gladly give you that credit in the post that contains the info in question.
New Information
November 30, 2007This weekend I will make some time to scan pictures and post them and I will also try and get the info I gleaned from rootsweb.com organized and posted. I found a lot of info there that was free. It carries a direct line of the Dalrymples back to Scotland in the 17th century. Also if things pan out on the Word side there could be some Welsh in our blood.
I’m not getting any comments so I’m not sure if anyone is actually reading any of this, but it makes for good practice.
Hopefully I’ll be getting some traffic since Cyndi’s List was kind enough to put this blog on her site(I submitted it, but still:-)). There’s a link on the sidebar, check it out, tons of resources and help just waiting to be clicked and read.
As time goes on………
November 19, 2007I will be getting family names categorized and authorized. I will be happy to hear from any Words or those that have Words in their family. You can sign up for an account at WordPress.com and comment to the posts or you can send me an e-mail and I will post your comment or information for you. Please remember that this is a public forum so that I can get the Word out
It can be seen be everyone that can get on the net, so if you don’t want it known, don’t type it!
A quick family synopsis composed by my sister.
November 19, 2007My mother’s family–my Mom (Agnes Lucille Dalrymple Word) Her Mom –Amanda Minnier - Her Dad –Clyde Hargar Dalrymple There is some question about the Minnier’s. I was told they immigrated here from France. Her (Lucille’s grandfather was named Samuel –I have found his military records from the Union army in the Civil War @ age 19–I have found census records from Pennsylvania that indicate his mother’s name was Amanda–he apparently named his daughter for his mother & I was named for his daughter (my grandmother). When I have attempted to trace the name Minnier-I come up with all Germans & one Swiss but no French linage-so I don’t know. Amanda married Clyde & I know the Dalrymples were Amish or Mennonite. These people tend to marry among themselves–the Minnier’s began in Pennsylvania & moved to Illinois. We all know about the Pennsylvania “Deutsch”. There are also many Amish in Ill. So, I would say the probability is high that the Minnier’s were actually German arriving here from a French port. Sam married Susan King & that sounds English to me but I am not sure. The Dalrymple name is Scottish. I am sure of that-that was researched by my cousins. but Clyde’s parents were named Efraim & Armada & there seems to be a very strong German link there as well. The Word’s- My Daddy (Charles Robert Word) was named for his father (Robert-no middle name) & his Dad’s grandfather (Charles S. Word) His (my grandfather- Robert)last name was actually Oliphant. He was raised by his mother’s parents (Charles & Drucilla) & went by their name. The family name was not legally changed to Word until Chuck was born & my Dad was not sure what to put on his birth certificate so they all went to court & changed their names. Anyway, I digress–It is believed the Word family was primarily German & the Oliphants were English. My Dad’s Mom was Fay Jones Word. She talked of everything Irish & believed she was Irish but her maiden name was Jones. Her Dad was Oscar Jones & her mother’s name was Jesse Spencer & they were Episcopalian–so I suspect they were English living in Ireland. I keep saying, i am going to write all that I know about our family history for my family & Brad & Ty but never seem to get it done. Claudia & Tessie should know a lot about the Brewer family. Please share with Brad & M.B. they may want this info someday when Jack begins to ask questions. At one time when Brad was a teen-ager he researched the Word family & had a lot of info. i don’t know if he kept it or not. I do know , our cousin Richard would love to have it.
Hello world!
November 19, 2007I hope to be able to get the ball rolling on something I have wanted to do for a while and that is to become acquainted and re-acquainted with family. Communication is something I’m not particularly good at keeping up with, phone calls, letters, cards and such, but I hope that this will help. As time goes on I would like to be able to send e-cards to a ton of Words and other relations. I hope that as time goes on I can add a lot of great information to this site with everyone’s help. The next post will be an e-mail my sister sent to my newest niece-in-law. I hope this will get the ball rolling…..
